More about Holly
I draw, I would say, on a background of overcoming various life challenges. In my quest for personal growth, I worked my way around the world for six years, living in France, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China and Nepal. I kept challenging myself to keep going until I finally got sick of it –and I got sick. My health challenges began while I was traveling in Asia (1996-99) with numerous gastrointestinal adventures. This led to years of repressed immune function, a litany of illnesses and therefore a steep learning curve about healing myself with food. In the last few years, I have finally made myself well, overcoming my decades-old sugar addiction and outgrowing many of my own self-limiting beliefs.
During this process, I have become a student of healing, spirituality, our food system, the politics of food, the history of food and the many theories of nutrition. Eastern concepts of healing, communication and spirituality inform my life and my practice. I use the insight and compassion I have gained throughout my experiences to support my clients with a mixture of deep listening and loving challenges.
These are some of my most deeply held beliefs:
I believe that all creatures are one, expressions, exhalations of the
planet. I believe in the pursuit of destruction of the illusion of
separateness. I believe that all true health and happiness is derived from
the destruction of that illusion and connecting with something beyond
yourself. I believe that the “beyond” is expressing itself through me and
through everybody and my job is to not obstruct the flow of its expression.
I believe that food is a crucial to this flow of expression. It can either
create a body that acts like a copper wire conducting this expression and
connection freely, or it can create a body that acts like aluminum that
creates only obstruction and resistance.
I believe that our current food supply is dangerous and that the titans of
industry are responsible for actively choosing profit at the expense of
people’s lives. I believe that our law makers are criminally negligent for letting
this happen. I believe I have a role to play in rectifying this injustice and in
assisting people to realize that their bodies are conductors. I believe that
human consciousness will determine the fate of the planet and that the food
we eat will determine human consciousness.
I have been compelled for years to be of service. It is my most profound wish that my work in the world would leave the world better off. To alleviate suffering, to nurture growth and healing, to bridge gaps in understanding, to be the change I wish to see in the world. My wish to be of service is the core motivation of my life.
As a food activist, I like to inspire people to get active about their food. I now think of myself as a canary in a coal mine. I happen to be very sensitive to food and I have a loud voice with strong (and hopefully well-informed and articulate) opinions! This works well when my intention is to have an impact on policy issues that affect food choices in our schools, farms, institutions and assistance programs. I also intend to focus on “where the rubber meets the road” and create a location where Mainers can attend regular whole foods cooking classes to learn how to prepare whole food, local, organic, ancestral, macrobiotic, raw, ethnic and therapeutic-diet meals.
I live in Camden, Maine with my son. I enjoy gardening, traveling, writing, biking, dancing, parenting, hiking, reading and cooking. I enjoy my work deeply and feel so blessed to be invited to witness people’s transformation.
